Mental Health in an Unequal World: Advancing Mental Health Services for People on the Move

Carmen Valle-Trabedelo, Co-Chair IASC Reference Group on MHPSS in Emergency Settings and Member of the IFRC Reference Centre for Psychosocial Support will be the moderator for this high-level side event for World Mental Health Day 2021.

On the occasion of the World Mental Health Day, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), the International Organization forMigration (IOM), the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) andthe World Health Organization (WHO), in partnership with UN Member States, are hosting this side event to examine how inequalities impact mental health andpsychosocial wellbeing among refugees, migrants and IDPs.

 

This event seeks to:

  • highlight the humanitarian consequences of maintaining the status quo ofglobal inequalities and systems of discrimination, with particular focus on theimpacts of inequality on mental health and psychosocial wellbeing among people on the move
  • stress the need for continued action and investment in robust, quality,affordable, and accessible mental health systems by showcasing examples ofbest practices and programmes from different operational contexts
  • share innovative solutions to assist UN Member States in their effort toimplement MHPSS services within the Universal Health Coverage frameworkand across all relevant sectors (social welfare, education, labour, among others),particularly in the context of building forward better from COVID-19.
