Training in Copenhagen: Programming and M&E for Psychosocial Interventions

War, earthquakes, flooding, violence, poverty, epidemic outbreaks, forced migration and other humanitarian disasters challenge the lives of many across national borders. Today, psychosocial support is widely offered in humanitarian responses and evidence indicates that early and appropriate community-based psychosocial support can reduce stress and human suffering, and speed up the recovery process, both in emergency psychosocial responses and in on-going social and health care programmes. Monitoring and evaluation (M&E) systems are essential in achieving well-designed programmes that are appropriate to the people and context, and that are effective and efficient. Taking the time to allocate time and resources for M&E planning ensures that psychosocial interventions are conducted safely and with respect to local cultures and traditions. Without these systems in place, resources may be wasted on programmes that are ineffective or inappropriate, and interventions run the risk of doing more harm than good. The PS Centre has developed a framework to ensure a systematic approach for monitoring and evaluating psychosocial programmes in the Red Cross Red Crescent Movement. The framework was developed in order to identify and ensure best practices throughout psychosocial (PS) programmes, contributing to quality PS interventions and strengthening advocacy for PS programmes.  The framework aims to support National Societies and other organisations in designing relevant M&E systems for PS programmes, to help in programme planning and development of PS strategies.

Training objective

The training provides the knowledge and tools necessary for participants to carry out assessments, develop and adapt indicators and monitor psychosocial interventions. There will be special focus on practicing the use of the monitoring and evaluation framework and tools developed by the PS Centre. Subjects covered in the training are:
  • Introduction to planning and implementing PS programmes
  • Assessment
  • Data collection
  • Develop M&E plan for PS activities
  • Indicators and Means of Verification tools

Dates, deadlines and other important information:

The training takes place in Copenhagen on 19 – 21 November 2019 from 9 to 17 all days. Participants must be able to participate in the entire training, arriving the night before and departing from the training venue no earlier than 5 pm on the last day of training (earliest possible flight from Copenhagen at 8 pm). Target group and required qualifications

The participants for this training workshop are likely to be staff and volunteers who would like to build on their existing knowledge and skills of M&E and PS programming. They may come from a variety of backgrounds, e.g. PS support practitioners, social workers, health workers and/or managers.

Participants are expected to have…

  • Experience with planning and designing psychosocial support interventions
  • Knowledge about community-based psychosocial support (as a minimum at the level of the IFRC Community-based Psychosocial Support foundation training)
  • Understanding of M&E terminology, experience working with Logical Framework Approach or similar methods
  • Willingness to participate actively during the training
  • The training will be conducted in English so all participants must have sufficient English skills to participate actively in the training


The price of the training is 785 EURO and participants must cover their own expenses for travel, accommodation and per diem. Lunch, snacks and one dinner will be provided during the training.
