The webinar Moral Injury: expanding our understanding of trauma is now available online

The concept of moral injury can expand our understanding of trauma. Moral injury refers the lasting psychological, social and spiritual harm caused by actions that transgress a person’s deeply held moral beliefs and expectations.

At a webinar on the 23 January 2019 Angela Nickerson from the University of New South Wales and Ferdinand Garoff from the Centre of Psychotraumatology discuss the concept of moral injury and how it expands our understanding of trauma in refugees and humanitarian workers.

Angela Nickerson explains why it is important to talk about moral injury:

“I got interested in the concept of moral injury because many of my clients were really struggling with the existential aspects of what had happened to them. I remember one particular client who was a torture survivor who found it so difficult to understand how another human being could inflict this kind of violence and degradation on another person. It really challenged his beliefs and his notions about how the world works”.

The webinar is a part of the Mental health and psychosocial support research webinar series hosted by the IFRC Reference Centre for Psychosocial Support and the Red Cross and Red Crescent Research Network on Mental Health and Psychosocial Support.
